Learn Modern Calligraphy

Modern pointed pen calligraphy is the height of beauty with its curved lines, exciting bounces and sophisticated yet modern look. It breaks the traditional calligraphy rules and allows you to add your own flare and style.

Use your newly developed modern calligraphy skills to create your own greetings cards and gifts, address your wedding invitations, make your own place names or send impressive letters via good old snail mail!

An oasis of calm

Along the journey of learning modern calligraphy, I defy anyone to ignore the therapeutic qualities of the skill! The calm repetition of practising the basics and letters is a great way to spend the evening with your favourite drink. It’s quite easy to lose yourself for hours at a time! Modern calligraphy is an excellent outlet for those with anxiety or other mental health conditions, providing a way to express emotions through beautifully written words.

One big calligraphy family!

My live online modern calligraphy course will give you all of the basic skills you need to write beautifully, as well as advice on how to add your own flare and style. You will receive personalised feedback on your work each week as well as feedback from your course community. This is a great opportunity to share your progress with others along the way!

But my handwriting is TERRIBLE! Surely I can't learn calligraphy?

First of all, I’m sure it’s not that bad! Secondly, you're in luck! Learning calligraphy has absolutely nothing to do with your usual handwriting. It is all about seeing letters as a series of shapes then training your hand muscles to make those shapes consistently to produce beautiful letters. My handwriting is mediocre at best, I promise!

Who is this course for?

The Beginners' Modern Calligraphy course is suitable for beginners or someone who has some prior experience but would like to refine their skills.

How does the course work?

We’ll be using Zoom and I will send an invitation code once your booking has been accepted. Then on class date, use your computer or tablet to join me by clicking on the link sent to you.

Once you’re online you can watch and learn in the comfort of your home. When the lesson has finished you will have access to a recording to help refresh your memory on the techniques you have learned.

How will I know that I’m getting it right?

Each week I will ask you to submit a nice clear photo of you work so that I can give you some personalised feedback on how you are doing and how you can refine your technique further. There will also be a dedicated Facebook group to share your progress with your fellow classmates throughout the course and beyond. If all else fails and something is just not right, I will be on hand to help solve and struggles along the way.

I am left-handed. Can I still learn modern calligraphy?

This course is most definitely suitable for left-handed people. I know a great many talented calligraphy artists who are left-handed. You will most likely need a straight pen holder so please let me know when you enrol so that I can find the right one for you. I will give you some slightly different instructions at the beginning but other than this your experience should be the same for the rest of the course.

What will I need?

A calligraphy kit will be delivered to your door which will include everything you need – a nib and pen holder, a jar of my favourite black sumi ink and all of the worksheets you need printed on high quality paper. I will also include some resources you will need towards the end of the course to create some beautiful pieces featuring your own modern calligraphy writing. You will also need a ruler towards the end of the course. will mention a few other bits of kit as we go along that you may benefit from if you wish to take your calligraphy further.

Just email me with any other questions you have and I will respond as soon as I can.

Beginners’ Modern Calligraphy Course

As a mum of two young little ones, it was great to be able to dedicate time to myself and learn a new skill while still being able to do it from home (even with the odd interruption!) It was lovely to meet likeminded people and hopefully we will me up in person at some point too!

Highly recommended; I’m really loving the course and I can’t believe the progress I have made in less than a month!

I’ve really enjoyed these classes. The class structure works well at a good pace - not too quick or too slow. The most valuable part of the classes for me has been the weekly individual feedback. It either guides me to improve or encourages me to keep it up! Thanks Jane!

Such great classes! I’ve learned so much over the past few weeks and have loved every minute of it. The calligraphy kit you sent out meant that I could just “Zoom and go”. A brilliant way to relax and learn a new skill under expert guidance. Looking forward to the intermediate class?!
